Analysis Summary
The Iranian nation-state threat group has been actively targeting middle-eastern and US organizations. The group gets the name “TunnelVision” because of their heavy reliance on tunneling tools. The threat actor uses Log4j exploit to deploy ransomware and FPRC (Fast Reverse Proxy Client). They run PowerShell commands on infected systems by exploiting the Log4j vulnerability in VMware software. Legitimate public services that the group uses (and outbound connections to look out for) are:
- transfer.sh
- pastebin.com
- webhook.site
- ufile.io
- raw.githubusercontent.com
Some vendors suggest that the attributes of TunnelVision and Phosphorus are similar and therefore they must be linked, however, current data is insufficient to confirm this theory
