Rewterz Threat Alert – Bad Rabbit Ransomware – Active IOCs

July 5, 2022

Severity

High

Analysis Summary

The BAD rabbit – aka ExPetr, NotPetya, Nyetya, first appeared in 2017. There is presently no threat group associated with the Bad Rabbit ransomware but it share similarities with to the ransomware versions of WannaCry and Petya. A Bad Rabbit attack spreads by drive-by downloads on compromised websites and pretends as an Adobe Flash installation. Bad Rabbit malware is embedded in websites using JavaScript embedded in the HTML code of the site. When someone clicks a malicious installer, BadRabbit ransomware encrypts files and introduces users. Infections of the Bad Rabbit virus lock up victims’ computers, servers, or data, preventing them from regaining access until a ransom, usually in Bitcoin, is paid.

Remediation

  • Maintain cyber hygiene by updating your anti-virus software and implement patch management lifecycle.
  • Maintain Offline Backups – In a ransomware attack, the adversary will often delete or encrypt backups if they have
  • access to them. That’s why it’s important to keep offline (preferably off-site), encrypted backups of data and test them
  • regularly.
  • Emails from unknown senders should always be treated with caution.
  • Never trust or open ” links and attachments received from unknown sources/senders.
  • Block all threat indicators at your respective controls.
  • Search for Indicator of compromise (IOCs) in your environment utilizing your respective security controls
